How to build fine motor skills with play dough.

Fine motor skills involves using the small muscles in the hands and fingers. These muscles  gives us the ability to manipulate items, such as grasping, writing, and self-care skills. It is important to start at a young age to build hand-eye coordination, that is required for many life long skills.

Building good dexterity (control of the hand muscles), will help support the child in handwriting. Lack of pencil control can effect a child literary and writing skills.

Play dough is a great tool to help build fine motor skills.

1. It’s a great sensory play experience
2. Strengthens fingers, hands and wrists
3. Develops hand / eye co-ordination
4. Also its an open ended play experience, sparking imagination and creativity

You can find many great recipes to make home made play dough. My favorite is Kool Aid Playdough. It is simple, takes 5 minutes, smells great, and is safe if a young child decided to taste it!

You can also purchase Play-Doh, from Amazon
